Considering a New Area For Your Home Purchase?

When you are buying a home, you are not just buying the home, you are buying a lifestyle. A large portion of what happens in the surrounding area will directly impact your life, so while there is no “wrong” area, it is important for you to consider how the area will impact your life and determine if it is a good fit for you.

It is also important to consider how things will impact resale for your home. This purchase may be your primary residence, but purchasing a home is also one of the best ways to start building wealth.

Here is a list of things to do when you are considering purchasing in an area that you are not already living in:

  1. Drive through the area in the morning and after dark. Are there people around? Is it quiet or active? Do the neighbors seem approachable?
  2. Do a quick google search for recent news in the area. Good and bad these things may impact your lifestyle directly.
  3. Look up local parks and activities. For example, I LOVE karaoke. If there is not at least one karaoke place nearby, the area would not work for me. Make sure to make a list of the things that you love and check to see what resources the area has for them.
  4. Where is the area in proximity to the places that you visit the most? Work, medical care, family and friends?
  5. Check school ratings… even if you will not be using the schools. This will impact your resale value in a big way.

These are just a few ways for you to paint yourself a picture of what living in a particular area would be like. Make sure sure to ask your real estate professional for additional tips.
